Description

Be legendary (or not)! You and your team are entered in the very first Caveman Curling Championship. This game is a "muscle sport" (for your index finger!) Each team attempts to throw or flick their rocks, one at a time, down the frozen lake. Special objects such as hammers, which allow the rocks to be moved after the throw, and totems, which protect a thrown rock from being moved, add an extra layer of strategy to the game. The game has only a few very simple rules: 1) Throw (finger flick) your rock, aiming for the center of the fire pit on the other side of the frozen lake; 2) Then move your rock with a Stone Age hammer, or protect it with one of your clan's totems; 3) At the end of the round, the player or team closest to the center of the hut scores points. The first team or player to score six points wins! Featuring wonderfully whimsical art, great quality wood bits and a unique playing surface, this is a finger-flicking, fun-filled game for the whole family!

Designed by Daniel Quodbach, Caveman Curling is a game For 2 to 12 players, organized in two teams, for ages 7 and up.

In Caveman Curling each team attempts to “throw” or flick their rocks, one at a time, down the frozen lake. Special objects such as hammers, which allow the rocks to be moved after the throw, and totems, which protect a thrown rock from being moved, add an extra layer of strategy to the game. Play consists of rounds, at the end of which each team or player scores a point for each of their rocks closer to the center of the cave than any of their opponent’s rocks. The first team or player to six points wins!

Components

The components of Caveman Curling include:

  • 1 very unique and wonderfully illustrated roll out board
  • 2 slammers
  • 12 “rocks” (wooden discs), 6 in each of the 2 colors
  • 12 special objects which include: 4 big hammers, 4 little hammers, and 4 totems split between the 2 colors
  • 1 set of rules.

Game Play

The game play of Caveman Curling takes place as follows:

Players/teams take turns. On a turn, take one mandatory action, and possibly one optional action, in the following order:

1. The player places their rock behind the bank line at the end of the frozen river. The rock must fully lie on the board. With a flick, he “throws” it as close as he can to the center of the cave. If any rock, at any time for any reason, comes in contact with the slammer (the bar at the end of the board) it is removed from play for the remainder of this round.

2. The second, optional, action is to use a special object. The player can use one and only one special object to affect the rock he just threw. Each object can only be used once per round. Once used, the object is discarded.

There are two types of special objects a player may use, hammers and totems.

Hammers come in two sizes, big and little. To use a hammer, the player places the hammer on the board, with the short side in contact with the rock. He takes his rock and places it on the other side of the hammer. This “hammer hit” must not make any other rock move. The player must place the hammer on the board, and the moved rock must be able to lie fully on the board.

The totem allows the player to protect his rock with an ancient and powerful totem. The player places the totem token on top of his rock. If, later in the round, this totem touches the board, the owner of the rock can remove the rock from play or he can let it stay in its new position. If the rock is removed from play, the owner gets to replay it at the end of the round. If multiple rocks are replayed in this way, they are played in the order in which they were removed. Totems are discarded from the round if they hit the board.

When all rocks have been thrown, the round ends and scoring occurs. Scoring is exactly like curling, petanque or bocce. Only 1 player or team scores in a round -- the one whose rocks are closest to the center of the cave. Score 1 point for each rock closer to the center than the opponent’s closest rock. Only rocks completely inside the cave score points. If no rock is in the cave, no player or team scores points.

After scoring, the board is cleared and players take back their rocks and special objects. The player/team that scored points begins the new round. The first player/team to achieve 6 points wins the game!
